Making a difference in the community is but one mission for the Representative Council of Learners (RCL) from Goodwood College, which aims to give back through their projects.
The RCL have projects per term where they embark on a mission to try and make a difference in their school and their community.
This time they collaborated with the Ruyterwacht senior centre and spoiled 65 fathers by serving them tea, dancing with them and making the fathers feel special.
“We as a school want to teach learners never to forget our senior citizens and their contribution to our lives,” Vashnee Naidoo, a teacher at Goodwood College, said.
“A visit to the seniors was a project which we want to continue to grow. We decided to reach out to the senior citizens as learners and teachers need to give back to the community,” Naidoo said.
On Tuesday 20 June a total of 65 fathers were served by RCL of Goodwood College and joined the seniors in dancing. They also handed R100 to one lucky father.
According to Naidoo, the RCL would like to visit the senior citizens once a month where learners can conduct facials and paint the ladies’ nails, while the boys play a little sport with the men. This is an initiative they would like to take further in the third term.
The RCL has also started a lunch feeding scheme at the school where learners are supplied with sandwiches during a break.
However, Naidoo said they are struggling to get donations of bread, margarine and sandwich fillings to continue our project.
Currently, teachers and learners are contributing whenever they can afford to.
