Armed
robbers targeted the Glengarry Shopping Centre for the second time in one week.
This time robbers
struck the cigarette shop at midday on Saturday. They escaped with cash and
cigarettes.
“At this
stage it is alleged that five unknown men entered the shop, two of whom then
left. One of the men asked for a packet of cigarettes. He paid for the cigarettes.
When the cashier looked up from the cash register, there were three men still
in the shop, two of whom were armed with firearms,” says police spokesperson
Captain Erica Crous.
“Two of the robbers went behind the counter and pushed the
cashier to the ground. An unsuspecting client entered the shop, whereupon they
grabbed her too and pushed her into a little office in the shop,” says Crous.
“She made a
noise and shouted and was allegedly hit over the head. She did not sustain any
serious injuries. The cashier was also taken to the back office.”
Crous says
it is believed that the robbers sped away in a white Toyota Avanza without
registration plates. Glengarry centre management indicated that security at the
centre was immediately stepped up after the first armed robbery at Wimpy last
Sunday, and that they have met with police in this regard.
“The safety of our
shoppers and tenants are a priority to us, said Anneke Mooklman.”
