An inmate was stabbed to death and more than 13 others seriously injured when a gang ritual fight broke out at Goodwood Prison on Monday night (12 June).
According to a statement released by the Department of Correctional Services, off-duty wardens staying on the premises awoke to the unusual sound of a distress loudhailer (megaphone), prompting them to rush to the correctional facility. They used minimum force to separate the warring members of the 26s and 28 gangs.
A 32-year-old offender was stabbed to death, whilst 13 others were seriously injured.
The statement says the Western Cape Regional Commissioner, Delekile Klaas, arrived at the scene only to discover blood all over the floor. Some of the self-made weapons confiscated by wardens were piled up in one corner of the facility.
The gang fight comes in the wake of the High Court ruling in December last year that the Department of Correctional Services reduce overcrowding at the Pollsmoor correctional facility.
