The leader of the Rebels gang, Victor Bowers (35) also known as Fox, was gunned down earlier today (13 December) in Elsies River as he was sitting in his car opposite the Reo Hotel.

According to Elsies River police spokesperson Captain Daphne O’Reilly the shooting occurred at about 13:50 in Halt Road.

O’Reilly says according to reports Bowers was parked opposite the hotel in his silver Jaguar talking to an unknown woman who was in the passenger seat.

“According to witnesses a white Ford Bantam bakkie pulled up next to Bowers and started shooting at him before fleeing the scene,” she says.

Bowers then attempted to drive away in the direction of Viking Way, but lost control of the car and went over the traffic island and the car came to an abrupt halt on the corner in front of the Reo Hotel.

“When police arrived on the scene  they found 15 bullet casings, seven of which hit Bowers who later died as a result of his wounds,” O’Reilly says.

According to witnesses the woman who was in the car with Bowers was taken to the hospital in a serious condition. At this stage police are unaware who the victim is and what the extent of her injuries are.

“We are investigating a case of murder and attempted murder and believe the shooting to be gang-related,” O’Reilly says.
