At just 23 years old, Tashreeq Matthews has already carved out a remarkable path for himself in the world of professional soccer. Hailing from Hanover Park, South Africa, Tashreeq’s journey is a testament to perseverance, hard work, and the relentless pursuit of a dream.

As the second oldest of four siblings, his early life was filled with the lively chaos of family, but it was on the soccer field that he found his true calling.

Early beginnings

Tashreeq began playing soccer at the tender age of four. “As a young boy, you always watch football. And my goal was to become a footballer,” he recalls. By the age of 11, he had secured a spot at the prestigious Ajax Cape Town academy, one of the best soccer academies in South Africa and Africa.

“Once you’re in the system, it brings you closer to becoming a professional,” says Matthews.

“But as the years go on, you realise that you can actually become a professional, but it’s not that easy. You have to put in the work, and your mentality has to be right.”

Growing up in Hanover Park, a community often faced with social and economic challenges, Tashreeq understood the importance of having a strong support system. “A lot of kids come from disadvantaged and underprivileged areas. Having support from your parents, friends, and also believing in yourself is crucial. Knowing what is right and wrong and making the right decisions is key.”

Playing against older kids from a young age gave Tashreeq a unique edge. “Always playing with the older age group gave me an advantage because I was with older kids. It was challenging, but I loved the challenge,” he explains. This early exposure to higher levels of competition helped him develop skills and a mentality that set him apart from his peers.

His journey wasn’t without its difficulties.

The decision to return to South Africa after playing in Europe was a significant one. Playing in big competitions like the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup in America, where teams like Real Madrid and Liverpool will compete, is a dream come true for Tashreeq.
