Police in the Western Cape are working hard to protect the environment and stop the illegal trade of marine life.

On Thursday 10 July, members of the Maitland Flying Squad and Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) carried a compliance inspection out at a business in Monte Vista.

During the search officers found a range of marine animals, including frogs, crabs, fish and lobster tails with an estimated street value of R100 000.

A 46 -year-old suspect was arrested on the premises and was being held at the Goodwood Police Station. He faced charges of selling and illegally being in possession of prohibited marine species.

The suspect was due to appear in the Goodwood Magistrates’ Court once he was charged.
