A 31-year-old motorcyclist from Melkbosstrand and a pedestrian were killed in a freak accident on the N1 on Saturday night, when the motorcycle collided with the pedestrian in a badly lit area of the road in Kraaifontein.
The accident occurred around 23:30 on the inbound road just before the Okavango bridge.
The deceased, Ruaan van der Colf, and the pedestrian whose identity is unknown to TygerBurger were both declared deceased on the scene, according to paramedic Kobus Kotze from Titanium Securitas.
Van der Colf’s wife who was with him on the motorcycle, escaped serious injury and is currently in a stable condition in hospital.
According to a confidential source who was first on the scene, the female pedestrian emerged from a vehicle that was pulled over on the highway just before the slipway on a very dark part of the road.
“The couple in the car had an argument when the woman suddenly jumped out of the car onto the road, and in that split second Van der Colf rode past and collided with her,” says the source who had ascertained the facts on the scene of the accident.
The source told TygerBurger that it is likely that the motorcyclist did not see her due to the absence of adequate street lighting.
While on the scene, a City of Cape Town traffic officer that was directing traffic was hit by a speeding bakkie.
Kotze says the traffic officer sustained a serious leg injury, and the bakkie involved fled the scene.Local authorities were on the scene to conduct a full investigation.
