Players and parents of Summerville Football Club celebrated the players’ talent and dedication at the club’s first awards ceremony held at Blackheath High School on Saturday 30 November.
The club, sponsored by Nioro Plastics, campaigned in the Two Oceans Local Football Association League in their maiden season.
Established at the beginning of the year the club exceeded expectations, said chair Fezile Hlangana.
“The under-19s are in the playoffs of the historical Bayhill tournament and finished second in the league.”
Hlangana thanked the parents for their involvement.
“We couldn’t have achieved so much without their hard work and commitment.”
Special guests included professional soccer players, Cape Town Spurs captain Asanele Velebayi, former Ajax Amsterdam and current Cape Town Spurs player Leo Thethani and former youth player Masande Tima.
“Velebayi, who is on the wanted list of Kaizer Chiefs, told the players to be disciplined and have passion for the game as it will take them further. Thethani touched on working hard and utilising opportunities as players never know who is watching. Tima mentioned the importance of balance and prioritising education.”
Hlangana said all the players were appreciated.
“All received medals and certificates as this symbolised the unity and togetherness in the team.”
Chairman’s awards went to Andile Bele and Mzi Mayongo for their commitment and pursuit of excellence. ”They represent the essence of football’s power to inspire and unite,” Hlangana said.
