Five-a-side teams from various streets in Beacon Valley participated in a soccer tournament at the Cape Flats YMCA soccer turfs in Strandfontein on Saturday 30 November.
“This day was filled with fun where the youth had an opportunity to meet peers from various parts of Beacon Valley. Children participating were from Lincoln crescent, Epsom Crescent, Ellis Park Crescent, and Muurbal Street in Beacon Valley,” says Ward 116 councillor, Solomon Philander.
Bringing youth together
Ward 116 committee member Mariam Mohamad who represents the sports sector in the ward lead the tournament with the aim to bring youth together to work together.
“As the ward councillor I addressed the group and congratulate them for participating. This is how we will change a community by making the right choices and working together in the community. This tournament brought youth together from different streets without stereotypes and labels. We must see each other for what we are worth and stop to enable division in our community. We must continue to collaborate and work towards dealing with our social ills in the community. We are first human before anything else,” he says.
Philander reiterates that children are the future. He adds that this project will be opened to more youth who sish to participate and encourages young childrent to join registered soccer clubs where possible.
“I will continue to create safer spaces for our community, in doing so I call on all our community to work with us to build a better Ward 116,” he says.
