Families lose everything in fire

Councillor makes appeal for donations to assist Bonteheuwel families.

Three Bonteheuwel families have lost everything in a fire which destroyed their homes on Sunday (21 May).

According to a report from the City’s Fire and Rescue Services spokesperson, Tracey Whittaker, firefighters responded to the call shortly after midnight. She says 14 firefighters responded to the blaze which destroyed three wood and iron structures leaving 21 people displaced.

“Disaster Risk Management was activated for humanitarian relief. The cause of the fire is due to an electrical short circuit. No injuries or fatalities were reported,” she says.

Bonteheuwel councillor Angus Mckenzie visited the scene and has since issued an appeal for donations to assist the families to get back on their feet.

“Among those affected is a one-month-old baby who needs various items. The children living on the property have lost all their valuables including school clothes and books. At this stage we are appealing for anything to assist the families. We are grateful that everyone is safe and I am calling on the community to assist,” he says.

Donations can be dropped at the subcouncil offices in Kiaat Avenue. Anyone who would like to donate, but cannot make it to the subcouncil office can call Mckenzie on 082 444 1850.
