Residents in Graanendal awoke to a metres-high explosion of water from the area’s main waterline on Friday. It was first reported just after six.
“Our water and sanitation team responded and the valves were closed and redirected after 08:00,” says City councillor Gerhard Fourie.
According to Fourie it was not a pipe burst and water supply was not interrupted.
“It would appear that it might have been a problem with valves, but the cause is still being investigated.
“The 130 mm pipe some 6,1 metres under the ground will have to be opened up to determine the cause and for reparation to start.”
