An ex-teacher in Goodwood is not sitting still after retirement, instead, he is keeping himself handy making energy-saving lights.
“Initially, I made a dozen energy-saving lights. I like to call them “portable lamps”, 82-year-old Cecil Pillay said.
It has become handy with the frequent “blackouts”, especially for learners when they are studying, now that it is exam time.
Once charged, the light can be used in any room. It will light up when plugged into an old or unused adapter. Since the unit has its own switch, students can use it at any time, anywhere.
Discarded materials
To curb our carbon footprint, Pillay used simple discarded materials such as sturdy bottles and other suitable materials for the base. However, all electrical components have been purchased.
He started making portable lamps in December 2021. The bulbs have to be charged.
Where households have no electricity they can make a plan, just as they do to charge their cellphones. According to Pillay, the product is unique as it is made from discarded materials.
Can be taken into another room
Some homes have smart or intelligent globes fitted. If there is loadshedding and when power is restored the power will come on, perhaps when you are asleep.
Pillay said the bulb must be protected so that water does not enter and damage the globe and its rechargeable battery, a 5-litre bottle can protect the unit.
It is not a toy, but safe
Electricity is dangerous so children must be assisted.
“This is not a toy, but it is safe when removed from the power source.”
The smart globe has a built-in safe, rechargeable battery, Even when being recharged the bulb remains cool.
