Arlene Keown, the librarian at The Huguenot Square Library, addressing business people and attendees of the employment programme.

The Huguenot Square Library in Belhar recently held its quarterly employment programme to which the community is invited. The programme is aimed at guiding the public and even creating employment opportunities.

According to Cheryl Petersen from the library the staff had arranged for local businesses and organisations to come and address the participants.

“Four organisations heeded the call and came to do presentations on the day. Arlene Keown, the librarian, welcomed everybody present. We were pleased to Have Zalia Doubel (Hustling Hair Fairy), Islin Beljoi and Lamese Fester (Tupperware), Ursula Cornelius (Avon) and Marshal Solomons (small-business owner) who not only inspired the community but also offered their services in guiding people who are interested in starting their own small business. Despite the low turnout it was a very successful programme as most presenters offered to return to the next programme,” says Petersen.

Petersen said they are definitely looking forward to hosting the next event to empower our community even more. “These kind of programmes are important in communities with low employment rates and we believe that it serves a purpose. Some people need inspiration while others might just lack the knowledge to start their own business,” she says.
