Two suspects have been arrested for the murder of a seven-year-old girl in Elsies River.
According to a report by provincial police, officers were called out to the scene of a shooting on Sunday 11 December at 19:45 in Whitehouse Way.
Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk says on arrival they found a seven-year-old child with a gunshot wound through her right cheek. He says the child died as a result of her injuries and a second victim was also found with a gunshot wound in his lower left leg.
The next day, detectives followed up on information received on the whereabouts of one of the suspects and arrested a 17-year-old boy in Blue Downs.
On Friday 13 January, detectives received information that the second suspect was expected to appear in the Goodwood Magistrate’s Court that morning on unrelated charges and arrested the 32-year-old man for this incident.
He will appear in the Bishop Lavis Magistrate’s Court this morning (16 January) on murder and attempted murder charges.
“Violence against women and children is always high on the agenda for police and the officers involved are applauded for their hard work to ensure that justice is served in the case of the murder of the seven-year-old girl,” says Van Wyk.
