The school community of Elnor Primary in Elsies River are walking tall after the principal and deputy principal raked in the medals at the recent Western Province Athletics for Seniors and Masters.

Principal Mark Agulhas received four medals (one gold, two silver and one bronze) while the deputy principal Duncan Isaacs achieved a staggering nine (four gold, three silver and two bronze). The highlight for the pair was their participation in the pentathlon with five items (javelin, discus, shot put, hammer throw and weight throw).

Both did very well in all five categories, but it was the headmaster who walked away with silver, while the deputy had to settle for bronze.

Agulhas said Isaacs had been an athlete for many years while he started training only a few months ago. “I have to take my grandson to the track to practise, so I thought I may as well join rather than just wait for him. Isaacs is an inspiration to me as encourages me to exercise, train and participate. He is actually a better athlete and a more committed one. We are both in the age group 55 to 59, referred to as Masters athletes.”

Agulhas trains and exercises for about an hour, two to three times a week. “We want to see more older people train and become fit. Training keeps us healthy.”
