The quiet suburb of West Beach in Table View has been rocked by the tragic murder of a 78-year-old woman in her own home last week. The shocking incident has left the community reeling as police investigate the circumstances surrounding her death.

Police confirmed the arrest of three Malawian nationals in connection with the crime and investigations are ongoing.

The victim, whose identity has not yet been released, was discovered by medical personnel who responded to the scene with police.

Table View police spokesperson Capt Adriana Chandler reported that there were no signs of forced entry, and the only item reported stolen was the victim’s Hyundai SUV, taken from her garage.

“When police officers arrived medical services were on the scene, who informed the officers that they found the 78-year-old woman, who had bruises to her body,” Chandler told the newspaper.

Residents in the area are in a panic, demanding more police visibility.

“Just a few weeks ago we had an incident of cars being stolen in the area,” said West Beach resident Illana Fourie. “Urgent action from police is needed, now more than ever. What happened to the sweet lady is such a tragic incident.

“We are no longer safe, not even in our own homes.”

She told TygerBurger the news of the murder quickly circulated on WhatsApp chat groups.

“The community is devastated and we are now living in fear.”

Another resident told the newspaper it is time residents stand together to protect their area.

Investigation

Chandler said on the same day of the murder, shortly after 21:00, flying squad members observed the stolen vehicle at a garage along the N1 in the Winelands area. Three suspects were apprehended, and another stolen vehicle was also recovered.

Provincial police spokesperson Wesley Twigg confirmed Table View police had opened a case after the murder in Raven Street, West Beach.

“Police officers were called to the crime scene where they found the victim lying on the floor in her bedroom. The victim was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel. According to the report the victim had bruises to her face, arms and neck.

“The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation.

“We can confirm the arrest of three adult males, who are nationals of Malawi.

“The suspects face charges of murder and house robbery and will appear in the Cape Town Magistrates’ Court once they have been charged.”

Ward 107 councillor Jonathan Mills said the tracing of the suspects was done with the assistance of the City’s security-technology network.

“The tracing of these suspects through the City’s security-technology network shows the importance of making sure that there is no place for criminals to rest easy in Cape Town. My condolences go out to the family of the deceased and I hope the perpetrators get the justice they deserve.

“I thank all the police officers involved for their swift response in light of such a terrible tragedy.”

Twigg appealed to anyone with information to call Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
