CAPE TOWN – Springbok lock and World Cup winner Eben Etzebeth proved that no matter how high you soar on the international stage, home remains where the heart is. The 113-cap Test veteran returned to his Goodwood roots for the official launch of his autobiography, Unlocked, drawing over 1,000 passionate supporters to N1 City Mall in a celebration that epitomized South Africa’s enduring love affair with rugby.

World Cup hero’s emotional homecoming
The overwhelming response to Etzebeth’s homecoming reflects the special place the towering lock holds in South African rugby. Since making his Springbok debut in 2012, Etzebeth has become one of the most recognizable faces in South African sport, playing pivotal roles in the 2019 and 2023 Rugby World Cup victories that united the nation.
According to Lisa van Heerden, marketing manager at N1 City Mall, the venue choice held deep personal significance for the rugby star. “Having grown up in Goodwood, N1 City Mall was part of his childhood and teenage years. He often mentioned that the mall was his playground growing up, so it felt only fitting for him to celebrate such a major milestone right here at home.”
Thousand-strong crowd exceeds all expectations
The turnout exceeded all expectations, with over 700 initial RSVPs swelling to more than 1,000 actual attendees on launch day. True to the character that has endeared him to Springbok supporters nationwide, Etzebeth ensured no fan was turned away, personally signing every copy and taking time for photos with supporters.
“The energy was incredible — the overwhelming excitement and applause as he entered said it all. This wasn’t just about a celebrity appearance; it was a homecoming that showcased the pride South Africans feel for their sporting heroes,” Van Heerden noted.
From Goodwood streets to global glory
The event underscores a broader narrative about South African rugby stars maintaining strong community connections despite international acclaim. Etzebeth, who currently plies his trade with the Sharks after stints in France and Japan, has consistently emphasized the importance of his roots throughout his career.

For South African rugby fans, Unlocked offers an intimate look at the journey of one of the Springboks’ most enduring figures. The autobiography chronicles Etzebeth’s rise from the streets of Goodwood to becoming one of world rugby’s most feared forwards, providing insights into the mindset that helped deliver back-to-back World Cup triumphs.
Rugby’s power to unite communities
The Goodwood celebration serves as a reminder of rugby’s unique ability to bridge communities across South Africa, with local pride translating into national inspiration. As the Springboks continue their quest for sustained excellence, stories like Etzebeth’s homecoming reinforce the deep community foundations that underpin South African rugby success.
The launch comes at a time when South African rugby continues to bask in World Cup glory, with players like Etzebeth serving as role models for aspiring young talent across the country’s diverse communities.
