A dog in Durbanville was shot several times by a neighbour after it got out of its property and allegedly attacked the man’s dog on Monday evening (30 October).
Durbanville police spokesperson, Captain Marchell Rhode, says the shooting happened around 19:12 in Portulaca Avenue.
“According to information provided to police, the owner of the dog, a Pitbull, opened the wrong gate of her property when the dog got out.
“The Pitbull ran to the house opposite them and apparently attacked a dog there. The neighbour got a firearm and shot the dog five times.”
A neighbour who spoke to TygerBurger on condition of anonymity said the Pitbull and the neighbour’s dog were fighting each other through the gate of the property.
“The dogs were behind the gate, there was no danger to the man’s family, surely the man could have done something other than shoot the dog,” the neighbour said.
It is alleged that the man’s wife went inside the house, got a firearm and gave it to her husband to shoot the dog.
The dog died on the scene.
Niel de Villiers from the neighbourhood watch said he heard the gunshots from his house. He said he had also heard that the dogs were fighting each other through the closed gate.
“The matter is still under investigation.”
TygerBurger visited the area on Tuesday morning and the owner of the dog that was shot, was not at home at the time.
When we went to the house of the man who shot the dog, a woman who confirmed to be their houseworker said both he and his wife were not home. TygerBurger was able to hear and see people talking inside the house.
The houseworker said the woman had taken their own dog to the vet and the husband was out.
The helper said she could not give any details on the matter.
Police on Tuesday confirmed a case of discharging a firearm in a municipal area was being investigated.
The case is still under investigation, TygerBurger heard.
