Ysterplaat Primary School (YPS) majorettes require funding. This Brooklyn team currently has 15 members, but is working towards 25 by the end of February.
The team, established in 2018-’19, is currently under new management and coaching.
According to Luke India Ramos, their coach, they are in the process of preparing for their upcoming season, but there are still quite a bit of things they need.
Ramos, who is affiliated to the Western Province Majorettes and Cheerleading Association (WPMCA), said: “I am an adjudicator and branched out to coaching.”
He recently also started his own majorette team for boys in the northern suburbs.
He adopted this junior team from another coach. However, according to Ramos the team is still in need of props and uniforms.
“Our team operates solely on the proceeds of various fundraisers,” Ramos said.
“Our athletes, who hail from underprivileged backgrounds, derive not only solace but also discipline and empowerment from this extraordinary sport of majorettes.
“It serves as a beacon of upliftment for both the participants and the school community.”
He said the team still needed batons, double flags, duals, maces, pom poms and tall flags.
