The 28-year-old Table View man charged with culpable homicide after he drove into a group of friends in Arum Road killing one teenager, has been released on R5000 bail.
According to a police report the alleged drunk driver was speeding down Arum Road on Wednesday 14 December shortly after 21:00 and hit a group of international volunteers. One Swedish teenager died and another volunteer is still in hospital.
Police spokesperson Captain Adriana Chandler says:”When officers from Table View Police Station arrived at the scene there were quite a number of medical emergency vehicles at the scene, tending to six people who sustained injuries during the accident. According to an eyewitness a vehicle was driving at high speed down Arum Road and drove into the group of six people, who were walking on the pavement”.
The motorist was charged with culpable homicide, reckless and negligent driving and driving under the influence of alcohol.
Community Policing Forum chairperson David Harris says they are shocked the man has been released.
