Driver injured in Stellenberg robbery

Robbers hold up British American Tobacco (BAT) truck in Bellville and force driver to drive to Stellenberg.

A police helicopter flying over Durbanville early this morning raised suspicions of locals and upon further investigation TygerBurger has discovered there was a British American Tobacco (BAT) robbery in Stellenberg.

At about 08:00 this morning (Tuesday 28 March), TygerBurger saw a police helicopter flying over Durbanville and according to a Durbanville mom, she saw a flurry of police vehicles passing her while dropping her son at school at the same time.

Durbanville police spokesperson, Captain Marchell Rhode, says the BAT truck was actually hijacked on the corner of Old Oak Road and Panorama Drive in Bellville where two suspects approached the vehicle and informed the driver to open the door.

“They climbed inside the vehicle and drove to Sneeuberg Street in Stellenberg. Two vehicles, a white Toyota Corolla and white Hyundai bakkie joined them at the scene. The boxes of cigarettes were then loaded in these vehicles,” he says.

Rhode says a driver and an assistant driver were in the BAT vehicle at the time. According to the report, the robbers were armed. Rhode also says the robbers assaulted the assistant driver.

The robbers fled the scene with 33 of the 50 boxes of cigarettes which was inside the BAT truck. No arrests have been made.
