• The Cape of Good Hope SPCA, supported by the City of Cape Town’s law enforcement, rescued dogs from a property in Joe Slovo due to unsafe conditions.
  • Despite repeated warnings, the owner failed to provide adequate shelter, leading to the removal of the dogs to ensure their safety.
  • The SPCA is now calling for community support through donations of blankets and animal food to aid in their ongoing relief efforts during severe weather.

The Cape of Good Hope SPCA, supported by the City of Cape Town’s law enforcement, returned to a property in Joe Slovo last week to remove dogs who live in a hostile environment.

“Two dogs were kept without any form of shelter. We’ve issued the owner with written warnings and they failed to comply. They became very hostile towards our inspectors when they visited the property. So, we are here today to come and remove these dogs and to make sure they are being kept in a place of safety with a warm place to sleep. We cannot leave them in these terrible conditions,” said the SPCA’s chief inspector Jaco Pieterse last week.

“Today, more than ever, no animal should be left without shelter in such harsh weather conditions.”

Warnings

Despite previous visits and clear warnings to the owner to improve the conditions, the SPCA’s call for compliance have been ignored.

When the SPCA visited the property last week, the owner still had to look for the dogs.

In a live online feed, the inspectors searched with the owner for the dogs, walking through narrow alleys and in the streets of Joe Slovo in the cold and rain.

The owner questioned why her dogs had to be removed as there are other dogs in the area who are living in the same conditions.

Pieterse says one can clearly see the lack of care as the owner had no idea where the dogs were roaming around.

On Thursday 11 July, the teams managed to locate one of the dogs, now safely in the care of the Cape Of Good Hope SPCA.

They have since taken the owner into custody

Pieterse says their inspectors had been dealing with a lot of cases the last few days with flooding in Cape Town.

“We’ve rescued several animals. It is not fair towards any animal to be left in these weather conditions without any form of protection or shelter.”
