Residents living near the Tygerberg Nature Reserve are notified not to be alarmed by smoke emanating from the reserve as City officials are conducting a controlled ecological burn.

City Mayco member for transport and urban development, Brett Herron, says the burn commenced at 09:00 today (6 February) and the officials hope to finish mopping up and damping down by 16:00 today.

He says there will be no road closures but the reserve is closed to the public on the day of burning and a few a days after until the area is deemed safe.

“Residents were informed and advised to keep their windows shut and to clear gutters of any leaf litter while the burning takes place. Flammable items such as gas canisters should be removed from outside areas and laundry should be taken off washing-lines to prevent odour contamination from smoke.”

According to an earlier statement the ecological burn is being done to remove ageing vegetation, restore ecological function and reduce the risk of runaway fires.
