Members of the De Grendel Lions Club were pleasantly surprised when they attended the Lions International District 410W mid-year conference in Paarl where the club received five awards for the 2024 to 2025 Lions year. The honours were bestowed on them by the previous District Governor, José Braga Borges.
The club received the following awards:
- Top 6 Club;
- Top 6 President – Lion president, Glenda Hon;
- Top 6 Secretary – Lion secretary, Yolanda de Jager;
- Most Improved Club, and
- Membership Chairperson Award – Lion Malcolm McCallum.
Hon, Lion president, and the members attending were totally bowled over as they did not expect it at all.
She mentioned that the awards, a combination of individual and club awards, were as a result of club members’ positivity and preparedness to roll up their sleeves and assist in the community when needed to do so. She also mentioned that three members from the club are currently serving on the District 410W Cabinet – De Jager (District chair for the Lions Peace Poster programme), McCallum (Zone chair for Zone 9) and fellow club member Jacques Mostert (District chair for specialty clubs).
Hon thanked the local community and organisations for their continuous assistance. She mentioned that more members would enable the club to reach out to even more people and invited interested community members to contact the club and follow its Facebook page.
“For more than half a century, the Lions Club of De Grendel has been touching lives, giving hope, and showing the true meaning of serving with heart,” Bevil Lackay, District governor, said during a visit to the club recently.
According to Hon, while the club was very honoured to receive the awards and with the kind words of Lackay still echoing, the club is still doing what it likes doing best, serving its community and showing that kindness really does matter.
