In a week marked by decisive action, police in Table View have made a series of successful arrests, showcasing their commitment to combating crime in the community. The operations, which spanned multiple days, targeted various criminal activities, resulting in the apprehension of suspects involved in offences ranging from petty theft to more serious crimes.
On Wednesday 14 August officers responded to a house robbery in progress in Colchester Road, Parklands, via a crime watch radio. The police officers arrived at the scene and were given a description of the suspect by an armed response officer at the scene.
Table View police spokesperson, Capt Adriana Chandler, said the suspect was seen jumping over the wall, in an attempt to evade arrest. The officers, together with armed response companies, searched for the suspect in the neighbourhood, and before long, the suspect was observed by the sector managers jumping a wall into a property in Woodlands Avenue.
“The officers swiftly apprehended the suspect, who had injured himself whilst jumping over walls. It was established that the suspect had gained access through a slightly ajar window, further breaking it, to gain access. The homeowner was confronted by the suspect, who was armed with a hammer. A struggle ensued between the homeowner and the suspect. The suspect managed to flee with a cellphone, which he dropped during his escape effort,” said Chandler.
The suspect, who is in his 30’s, appeared in the Cape Town Magistrates’ Court on 16 August.
More arrests
On Thursday 15 August security of a local shopping centre brought a suspect who had broken into a vehicle to the Table View Police Station. The owner of the vehicle explained that he had gone to the ATM and had locked his vehicle.
When he returned two minutes later, he found the suspect inside his vehicle, holding his two cellphones, that were left in the vehicle. He immediately got hold of the security, who took the suspect to the police station.
“The suspect was immediately searched, and a jamming device was found in his possession. The arresting officer recognised the man as one who was seen on footage where vehicles in the near vicinity had been broken into, by means of a jamming device,” Chandler said.
The suspect, in his 40’s, remained in the holding cells until his court appearance on Monday 19 August.
Station Commander Col Tjikamba Mbangu has lauded the officers for the arrests, but in the same breath, also expressed his gratitude towards the Parklands- and Table View Neighbourhood Watches, the armed response companies, all other stakeholders and the community for partnering with the police in the fight against crime.
The Community Police Forum (CPF) Chair, Dave Harris echoed the words of Col Mbangu at last week’s community Imbizo, where the public had the opportunity to raise concerns and share ideas, after the quarterly crime picture in the precinct was presented.
