It is important for councillors to report hot spots in their wards for the City of Cape Town’s law enforcement unit to address their concerns. This is necessary as the unit does not have enough manpower or resources available, councillors were told at a Subcouncil 3 meeting held on Thursday last week.
Inspector Don Bardo was addressing councillors at the meeting held at the Municipal Building in Milnerton when the matter was raised.
Roxanne Moses, Subcouncil manager, said the council has R580 000 in the budget for law enforcement overtime and added that councillors need to submit their hot spots as to where they want law enforcement to be deployed. Moses said overtime for officers is limited and that the budget is over and above that already spent.
She said councillors need to submit their hot spots for where they want law enforcement to be deployed.
The unit conducted several operations, and joint operations in Subcouncil 3 during August. These were conducted in Vasco and Summer Greens. A joint operation was also conducted on Friday with the Table View police and Milnerton police, as well as Home Affairs which focussed on illegal immigrants. Another one is planned to take place in Koeberg Road soon.
Meisie Makuwa, Ward 104 councillor, requested more visibility in Dunoon where cars are sometimes stoned along Malibongwe Drive. She says the intersection at Malibongwe Drive and Potsdam Road specifically is an area of concern.
Bardo says law enforcement officers, along with traffic services and Metro police, do conduct regular patrols in the area, but that they cannot do it every day. “We do have members on the N7 highway for those who throw stones on the N7. We cannot be there the whole day, but we are there,” Bardo says.
