Durbanville police have issued an alert over a new modus operandi used by criminals to break into vehicles.
According to a statement by police spokespserson Lieutenant-Colonel Theo Fisher, in the period between 1 November to 15 December 10 cases of theft out of and from motor vehicles were reported.
He says the incidents took place in the Durbanville CBD and during investigations officers discovered a new crime trend was emerging.
“It was established that the criminals have a new modus of breaking into motor vehicles. Once you move into the parking bay, they move closer to your vehicle, as if they are parking attendants or even security officials, and as soon as you get out of your vehicle, they open your passenger back door slightly without you noticing.”
Fisher says as soon as you leave your vehicle, the thieves take whatever valuables they can find in the vehicle. He warns residents to be aware of this new crime trend and to call the Durbanville Police Station on 021 970 3800 if they witness suspicious activity.
