A police officer was shot during a high speed chase at the Bayside Shopping Centre over the weekend.
The officer was part of the contingent that gave chase to a group of armed robbers following an armed robbery at a cellphone store at the mall, says provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Novela Potelwa.
He is in a stable condition in hospital.
“Table View police followed information about a white getaway [vehicle] after an armed robbery at a cellular store and pursued it. Once the suspects realised the police were on their heels they abandoned the vehicle and ran in different directions.
“That did not deter the police; they continued a high speed chase and apprehended five suspects.”
Potelwa says one suspect was arrested on the scene on West Coast Road, where the police constable was shot.
“Four other suspects were arrested in the Sunningdale residential area and two of them were arrested with the assistance of a local security company,” she says.
“Police recovered 30 cellular telephones taken from the robbery. The getaway vehicle was also seized. All suspects will appear in court soon. A police investigation initiated will also determine if the suspects can be linked to other crimes.”
Provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula, has commended the members involved for their good work.
