In an era where the fast pace of life often leaves little room for reflection, a unique train journey through some of the Cape’s most breathtaking landscapes provided a therapeutic escape for those grappling with trauma.

As part of an ongoing community-based project in Kraaifontein, 30 people made the scenic train journey to Elgin and back aboard a vintage steam train last Sunday.

TWM Foundation, a non-profit company in Kraaifontein, and In Christ United Church collaborated with the Ceres Railway Company to make this unforgettable all-day trip possible.

The trip formed part of the “A change is as Good as a Holiday” project, which directly supports the “Not in my town,” campaign, an initiative in the fight against gender-based violence, femicide, senior abuse, suicide, and other pressing social ills such as substance abuse and gangsterism.

“The approximately four-hour scenic journey from Cape Town aboard a vintage steam train took participants through a picturesque route, culminating at the vibrant Elgin Market,” says Tanelle Welff-Dixon from TWM Foundation.

“Beyond creating cherished memories, the trip fostered a positive environment that significantly contributed to the healing process of those suffering from various forms of abuse. It also played a crucial role in helping to restore families ravaged by these social ills, offering a much-needed respite and the opportunity to rebuild bonds.”
