The In Touch Athletic Club of Kuils River will host a special trail run and walk on Sunday 2 November at the Zevenwacht Wine Estate.
The event aims to raise funds for 12-year-old Mason van Dyk, affectionately known as “Little Mason“.
Mason was born with Harlequin Ichthyosis (HI), an extremely rare skin disorder that prevents the skin from forming a protective layer and impairs vital functions.
He was the first recorded case of HI in South Africa.
Doctors initially gave Mason just five days to live, but he defied the odds. Despite ongoing physical challenges, his mental and intellectual development is normal.
Raising a child with special needs comes with significant financial strain. Mason’s care is similar to that of a burn patient and must be provided 24-7. His prescribed creams and medical needs are costly.
All proceeds from the run and walk will go towards purchasing a special wheelchair to improve Mason’s comfort and mobility.
