Questions about the maintenance of Brand Park have been addressed by the City of Cape Town, with officials confirming that the facility is being maintained according to standard schedules despite concerns raised by residents.
Mayco member for community service and health, Francine Higham, responded to a media inquiry about the park’s upkeep, emphasizing that the recreation and parks department has been following regular maintenance protocols and recently completed several improvement projects.
“Brand Park, managed by the recreation and parks department, is currently up to date with its cleaning and maintenance which follows the City’s standard maintenance schedule,” Higham said. “The park was last mowed on 27 September, and the next mowing schedule is set for the first two weeks of November. In addition, the department recently completed repairs to the paving and irrigation of the park, as well as installed new gym equipment.”
City projects start well but are often not completed adequately.
A few weeks ago residents in the area expressed their unhappiness about regular maintenance of the area at large as well as the park.
According to a residents group they often have to jump in to do maintenance work. They say the pathways are broken, and although money was spent on the irrigation system, irrigation is not being done.
“City projects start well but are often not completed adequately, which translates to wasted money,” said resident Nadia du Toit. “I struggle to get hold of the ward councillor for ward 111, which is why residents have now stepped in to do general work in the area.”
