Following a freak accident in Gladstone Street, Churchill Estate in Parow two weekends ago, in which a private vehicle drove into an open repair trench, with half of the vehicle nearly inside the hole and its rear exposed, the City of Cape Town last week indicated that the area where the accident had occurred would be made safe again.
TygerBurger reported on the accident, which occurred on Saturday 11 January, in which a white utility vehicle drove into the trench, (“Driver crashed into hole” 15 January). A photograph of the accident scene was also shared on social media.
“The danger netting will be reinstated and the necessary signage replaced to indicate that the road is not safe for vehicles to use,” Mayco member for Water and Sanitation Zahid Badroodien said on Thursday last week, adding the City apologised for the inconvenience.
He explained the site had been marked to ensure the safety of vehicles and pedestrians.
“The repair site was clearly demarcated as unsafe for vehicles to use. Part of the road was fenced-off with danger netting to prevent cars from accessing the repair site.”
Badroodien said the completion of the repair was scheduled for last week. The repair comes after the City’s water and sanitation directorate was alerted to a possible sewer collapse in Gladstone Street on Wednesday 2 January.
“It was investigated by City officials on the same day,” Badroodien said. “The repair team was immediately scheduled for the following day to attend to the collapsed sewer pipe. On Thursday 3 January, as planned, the sewer-maintenance team attended to the repairs of the collapsed sewer pipe.”
