- Bothasig residents have dealt with persistent pothole problems for years, with temporary repairs recently completed on Visagie Street.
- The city plans to implement a more permanent solution with a road reseal in early 2025.
- Local councillor Miquette Temlett expressed gratitude for the temporary repairs and looks forward to the upcoming permanent fix.
The ongoing issue regarding potholes in Bothasig might soon be something of the past.
Potholes in Ward 5, with Bothasig specifically, have been a topic on the Subcouncil agenda for some years now. Since 2020 TygerBurger has been reporting about complaints, repairs and resealing work undertaken by the City of Cape Town’s urban mobility department – the last news story being published in September this year, (“Road repairs to continue in Bothasig”, 4/9).
One of the roads that was described as being problematic, requiring urgent attention, was Boom Street, Bothasig.
Rob Quintas, Mayco member for urban mobility, recently visited Visagie Street in the area accompanied by Miquette Temlett, ward councillor. This comes after Temlett notified him of numerous potholes along this stretch of road, he wrote on his social media platforms afterwards.
Visagie Street, Bothasig
Quintas says the City’s Road Infrastructure Management (RIM) teams have been hard at work to assess and address the backlog of potholes formed during the recent winter period.
The repairs along Visagie Street are temporary repairs which involve filling the pothole with a material called “coldmix”, while a more permanent solution in the form of a road reseal which include applying a new layer of hot premix asphalt to restore the road, is scheduled to take place in the first quarter of 2025, Quintas wrote.
It is worth noting that the majority of potholes develop during the rainy season. Potholes are caused by water getting into the road structure through the surface when it is cracked or damaged due to ageing or other damage, he wrote.
Gratitude
Temlett welcomed the visit and work being done. “I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to the City’s Road Infrastructure Management teams and councillor Rob Quintas, for heeding my call after I have been escalating the potholes in Visagie Street, Bothasig for more than eight months.
“I am grateful that these are now addressed albeit with temporary cold-mix solutions, as we look forward to the planned resealing in 2025,” she told TygerBurger.
The RIM department has various road repairs, reseal, resurfacing and rehabilitation projects currently under way across Cape Town and many more planned between now and May 2025, says Quintas.
