The City recently held a consumer-education session for first-time homeowners at its Bonteheuwel Infill housing project. These are held to empower new beneficiaries with information about the practicalities of homeownership, including budgeting, maintenance, drafting a will and the personal responsibilities of owning a property.
Bonteheuwel Infill is one of the City’s key Breaking New Ground (BNG) state-subsidised housing projects which will provide 273 qualifying beneficiaries and their families with a safe and dignified place to call home. The R140 million project is expected to be completed in mid-2026, if all goes according to plan.
Life changing
“Owning a home is a life-changing milestone,” said Human Settlements Mayco Member Carl Pophaim. “It provides safety and stability, peace of mind, and is an investment that will grow in value over many years to come. It is important for beneficiaries to be well-informed, equipped with the knowledge and tools to manage and protect this important asset properly. This project highlights the City’s commitment to empowering residents, enabling redress and improving access to well-located housing opportunities across the metro.
“The Bonteheuwel project is a step forward in providing safe and affordable housing while also supporting community upliftment and sustainable development in neighbourhoods across Cape Town. We thank all stakeholders in the successful roll-out of this project. Beneficiaries of City housing projects are selected in accordance with the City’s Housing Allocation Policy and Housing Needs Register to ensure housing opportunities are made available in a fair and transparent manner that prevents queue jumping and to those who qualify for housing as per the South African legislation.
