A 29-year-old Kraaifontein woman is facing various serious charges after an altercation with the City’s Ghost Squad where she allegedly assaulted a traffic officer.
According to the City’s Mayco member for safety and security, JP Smith, the Ghost Squad was conducting an operation aimed at tackling illegal street racing across the northern suburbs on Wednesday (25 January) when the women led officers on a chase after nearly colliding with the Ghost Squad vehicle.
The woman who is reportedly from Bonnie Brae allegedly refused to stop and ignored a number of stop signs and red traffic lights in Kraaifontein as she tried to get away. When officers eventually forced her to a stop, they found that she was too inebriated to provide a breath sample, Smith says.
At the police station, the woman asked to use the bathroom and while there, she assaulted a traffic officer by kicking and punching her. The woman was eventually restrained and had additional charges added to her docket, he adds.
Smith says in addition to the charges of reckless and negligent driving and drunk driving, she is also facing charges of assault; resisting arrest; crimen injuria; riotous behaviour; failure to comply with a lawful instruction; failure to furnish correct name and address and threatening a traffic officer.
Smith says the City is also considering further action in respect of racist utterances directed at the traffic officer by the suspect.
He explains she was uncooperative at the Shadow Centre, where drunk motorists are tested, and refused to have her blood drawn.
“She also threatened to lay counter charges of assault against the officer. The officer who was assaulted by the suspect sustained no serious injuries that required medical attention and remains on active duty.”
