Buses in Cape Town have been stoned and set alight amidst the provincial taxi strike on Monday morning (18 September).
Golden Arrow buses have been vandalised and one has reportedly been set alight in Delft.
Maxine Bezuidenhout from the City of Cape Town’s traffic services says the situation in and around Cape Town is highly volatile at the moment.
“We have just been informed that uniformed members are under attack in the areas where there is violence.”
According to Bezuidenhout, Delft Main Road and Mango Street have been closed. In some of the areas, tyres have been placed in the middle of the road and set alight.
It is reported that a traffic services vehicle has been stoned in Wynberg near Rosmead Avenue.
Commuters using buses have also been left stranded due to the violence that has erupted and buses not being able to move around in these areas.
City of Cape Town’s traffic services spokesperson, Richard Coleman says MyCiti buses are operating as normal although there was a problem earlier on.
Bezuidenhout says some roads that were closed off are now being reopened. Main road in Wynberg, the N1 at Joostenberg Vlakte and Bloekombos and Du Noon have been reopened.
The public is advised to be very cautious on the roads.
