Five suspects who are allegedly behind a spate of recent robberies at cellphone store across the Western Cape were caught on the R300 on Thursday 11 May.
According to a report from provincial police, on Wednesday 10 May an operation was conducted by police detectives when officers established the group were using a Renault Sandero to commit the robberies.
Police spokesperson, Captain FC van Wyk, says with the assistance of officers from the Provincial Operation Command Centre the vehicle was monitored. On Thursday, he says, the observation team saw a silver Renault Sandero with registration number FS68JCGP speeding on the N1.
“Backup was called and the vehicle was pulled over on the R300. A 9mm firearm with the serial number filed off, as well as numerous laptops, cellphones and tablets for which the occupants could not give a reasonable explanation of where it came from, was found inside the vehicle. Another Norinco 9mm pistol containing a magazine with five rounds was found.”
Van Wyk says five suspects aged between 22 and 33 were arrested for the possession of a prohibited firearm and possession of suspected stolen goods and were detained at Kuils River Police Station. He says the car belongs to a rental company in Edenvale and was not reported stolen.
“It was later established that there was a burglary at a shopping centre in Worcester and these suspects were linked to the incident. The investigating officer will oppose bail. The suspects will appear in the Kuils River Magistrate’s Court once charged.”
