Cash-in-transit heist leaves pedestrian injured

A pedestrian was hit by a stray bullet while walking on the same bridge.


Police are searching for suspects who were involved in a cash-in-transit heist and shootout in Parow on Tuesday morning.

Parow police spokesperson Captain Kevin Williams says Fidelity security services were at Net 1 Financial Services loading off 10 boxes with cash for the SASSA pay-out today. 

“While the security officer was busy loading the ATM machine inside the premises, they were confronted by two males. They were each armed with a rifle and told all security officers including the Net 1 staff in the pay-out hall to lie on the ground.”

Apparently the bullet penetrated her back and came out at the front.

He says the suspects managed to take four cash boxes and fled the scene. 

“It is now confirmed that two of the four boxes were empty at the time of the heist and the other two boxes were full of money. The value of the money taken is estimated to be about R160 000,” he says.

The driver of the fidelity vehicle gave chase to the suspects who fled the crime scene in a blue Toyota that resulted in a shootout on the Jan Van Riebeeck Bridge in Parow. 

“Consequently to the shootout a Datsun Go was damage by five rounds that hit the vehicle. The driver was not injured by the stray bullets.”

Williams says that a pedestrian was however hit by a stray bullet while walking on the same bridge.

“Apparently the bullet penetrated her back and came out at the front through her breast. The injured pedestrian was taken to the Tygerberg hospital.

“The suspects are still at large and the investigation continues. The case docket for further investigation was transferred to Organize crime.”
