The City of Cape Town’s Urban Mobility Directorate encourages residents and road users to report potholes as part of its “Fix It Before Winter” campaign. With the rainy season approaching, the City aims proactively to repair as many potholes as possible to help maintain a safer and more reliable road network.
Residents across Cape Town report an average of 1 400 potholes to the City monthly. This allows the department to direct resources to these complaints and allows the prioritising of the most urgent cases.
“We rely on residents to be our eyes on the ground as we prepare for the winter rains,” Mayco member for Urban Mobility Rob Quintas said. “By reporting potholes as soon as they are spotted we can act quickly to repair them before the weather worsens and causes further damage.”
Burst water pipes can also contribute to road damage. In some instances the work carried out on the road is a reinstatement following maintenance on underground services, such as water or electricity infrastructure. In these cases, the relevant directorate will repair the road once the service has been restored.
