An off-duty Hawks officer sprang into action in Melkbosstrand on Sunday (21 May) to assist local police to catch a burglar.

Police spokesperson, Constable Debbie Alard, says shortly after midnight  the officer who lives in Melkbosstand was woken up by his neighbour’s barking dogs. He then went outside to investigate and noticed a suspicious looking male with sunglasses carrying a bag.

When the man saw the officer, he fled and ran into the nearby residential area and then into the bushes. At the same time, Alard says, Melkbos police were responding to a house break-in complaint and with the help of the officer apprehended the suspect.

The suspect was found in possession of a camera and two lenses. “The stolen property was later identified by the owner of the property where the break-in occurred. The suspect, a 28-year-old male, is being detained on charges of possession of possible stolen property and housebreaking and theft.”

Milnerton police cluster commander, Major-General Aneeqah Jordaan commended the diligent work by the officer.
