Many of us know of someone that is battling against cancer, whether it’s a family member, friend, or someone in our community. That’s why the Brackenfell Leo Club has continued in its commitment to supporting young cancer warriors through a community initiative aimed at bringing comfort and hope to children receiving treatment.

Last year’s Leo President, Amy Cloete, who initiated the project during her term, was once again passionate about assisting the Oncology Unit at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital.

The club organised fundraising efforts through raffles, which enabled the purchase of essential toiletries for young patients, while members and supporters generously donated soft toys to complement the initiative.

We believe that even the smallest gesture can make a difference, and if we can brighten just one child’s day, then our efforts have been worthwhile.

These items were assembled into gift packs specifically designed for the children in the unit, and personally delivered to the hospital on 21 November.

Amy says this is something small they do to show support and hopefully bring a bit of joy to these young patients during what is undoubtedly one of the most challenging times in their lives.

“We believe that even the smallest gesture can make a difference, and if we can brighten just one child’s day, then our efforts have been worthwhile,” she said.

Know the signs and save a life

The club also emphasises the importance of recognising early warning signs of childhood cancer, which include continued and unexplained weight loss, persistent headaches, and increased swelling or pain in bones, joints, back, or legs. Parents and caregivers should be alert to any lumps or masses in the abdomen, neck, chest, pelvis, or armpits, as well as the development of excessive bruising, bleeding, or rashes.

Other concerning symptoms include constant infections, a whitish fluid behind the pupil, ongoing nausea, and constant tiredness that doesn’t improve with rest. Additionally, any eye or vision changes and recurrent fevers of unknown origin should prompt immediate medical attention.
