When Bothasig resident Sue Damster purchased a swimming pool and casually entered a competition ran by the manufacturer of the product, she was unaware that a few weeks later it would be her name drawn from the hat and crowned the winner. The prize that was up for grabs? A brand-new Toyota Starlet!
Damster was informed early in December that she was the lucky winner after purchasing her swimming pool for R10 000 at Brights Hardware Store Richmond Park over the Black Friday period. She finally took receipt of the keys to the vehicle on Wednesday last week.
Damster (40), a mother of two who works in the travel industry, told TygerBurger that her husband had been nagging her to buy a swimming pool on Black Friday last year. The family bought the Eco Tanks swimming pool and noticed that a competition was running in which you could win a car.
“We are totally thrilled,” she said last week after her win.
The win also came at the right time for the family.
“My car had died weeks before the competition. It has been dying slowly. It sort of gave up in August already and we have been living on prayer since then.”
She said the old vehicle was not the most reliable car, and that it was still financed.
Winner
Damster received a life changing call on 20 December.
“I still remember that I was having such a terrible day, with visas being declined. I had to fetch my youngest one from school and it was while driving home that I saw the call. I answered it and they told me that I have won a car,” she explains.
Damster says she went straight home to share the good news with her husband. “I was supposed to buy supper but went home first to tell my husband. He did not believe me,” she says.
She says receiving the news and hearing about her win was an amazing feeling. “It is an amazing car, it feels like I am driving on air. I have not won something like this, on this scale before,” she adds.
Chris Botha of Eco Tanks says their company decided to run the competition to celebrate a milestone – the company’s 20th birthday. Eco Tanks was started in 2004 and wanted to say thank you to its customers by giving away these prizes, he says.
Botha says Eco Tanks partnered with their retail partners, such as Brights Hardware, for this milestone. He says four cars were given away in total across the country, including in Cape Town, KwaZulu-Natal, Bloemfontein, and East London.
Customers could spend as little as R50 and more on an Eco Tanks product from any of the partners, to stand a chance to win, Botha says.
