Bothasig residents again took matters into their own hands last week and cleaned up an area that is known for vagrants setting up camp there and dumping rubbish.
The area in question is located next to Bosmansdam Road and runs parallel to the N7-highway. This was however not the first clean-up attempt. Residents have in the past also tried to clean up the area near to the freeway and a well-known grocery store. TygerBurger reported about the clean-up back then (“Residents roll up sleeves”, 19/3/23).
In 2023 a group of residents from Leonardo Village in Bothasig cleaned up the area where vagrants frequent and dump their rubbish. The area is also located near to the Bothasig Hall. In 2023 Dirk Smith, a resident, told the newspaper that the problem had been going on for quite a while, but that things were getting increasingly out of control.
BRA
The most recent clean-up was done by members of the Bothasig Residents Association (BRA), in partnership with the Bothasig Neighbourhood Watch, Community in Blue, and residents who rolled up their sleeves to clean up the bushy area.
The clean-up was conducted on Monday 20 January.
Mario Borchards, BRA-chair, said this problematic site, plagued by persistent dumping, saw the removal of a significant amount of waste, including several bags of rubbish and overgrown bushes.
“The clean-up was necessitated by ongoing illegal dumping in the area, reportedly caused by bin scratchers and carthorse operators. Despite frequent reports to law enforcement, the issue remains a major concern for the community. On our first attempt, the clean-up crew managed to clear a large quantity of debris and restore some order to the site.”
Problem persists
He said unfortunately, within two days, the area was littered once again, prompting the BRA to return and remove an additional 23 bags of rubbish. This repeated effort highlights the severity of the dumping problem and the relentless commitment of the BRA and the community to maintain the area, said Borchards.
“This corner has become a hotspot for illegal dumping, and it is a continuous battle to keep it clean. While we are grateful for the support of our community, we urge everyone to report illegal dumping and help us protect our environment.”
The BRA is calling on residents to remain vigilant and proactive in addressing the issue by reporting incidents to law enforcement and encouraging responsible waste disposal practices.
“We are also exploring sustainable solutions to prevent future dumping and ensure a cleaner, safer environment for everyone in Bothasig,” said Borchards.
