Police are investigating an arson case after a property in Bonteheuwel was allegedly petrol bombed on this morning (26 January) amid fights between rival gangs.
Ward councillor, Angus Mckenzie, says he was called out to the property in Boekenhout Street where several backyard dwellings were destroyed in the blaze.
“It was allegedly petrol bombed by rival gangs in the area. Everything was destroyed in the fire which also affected neighbouring properties.”
Mckenzie says thanks to the swift response by firefighters, there were no fatalities.
Bishop Lavis police spokesperson Captain Marie Louw says according to the official report, residents saw two unknown men running away after a Wendy house on the property started burning. She says according to the Fire and Rescue Services staff, there was a smell of petrol and police are investigating whether or not the case is gang-related.
According to residents there are no gangsters living on the property but they are aware of rival gangs fighting in the area.
Louw says police in Bonteheuwel are currently dealing with ongoing fighting between the Fancy Boys and the Bad Boys gangs.
“The dwelling is in the Bad Boys’ territory and we are investigating whether or not the arson case is linked to these fights,” she says.
