- Six recipients received these devices, as well as food parcels, to help improve their daily lives.
- Ward councillor Angus McKenzie praised the organisations for their work in restoring dignity and making Bonteheuwel more accessible for its disabled community.
Al-Imaad Foundation teamed up with Disabled People South Africa (DPSA) to give members of the Bonteheuwel branch assistive devices such as canes, wheelchairs and walking sticks. Six members of the branch were recipients of these devices and food parcels.
According to Aubrun Damons, chair of the Bonteheuwel branch, the idea started in July when DPSA and the Al-Imaad worked together on food parcels during the storm that hit the Western Cape.
says Damons.
According to him many people with disabilities’ lives are hampered by a lack of assistive devices. “Unfortunately these things are expensive and people will suffer in silence, while a simple walking stick can vastly improve their lives. We hope that the recent handover will do just that. We could see that the recipients appreciated what they receive,” says Damons.

Angus McKenzie, local ward councillor attended the event and lauded DPSA and Al-Imaad for their work.
“DPSA and Al-Imaad has been a huge succesful partner in restoring dignity to the to the people that are differently abled in our community. It is because of the hard work of organisations like DPSA that every public space in Bonteheuwel has been made disabled friendly. It is important that the day to day lives of the people are made as comfortable as possible. It has been great to welcome these organisations into Bontheuwel who made a needs assessment and brought the assistive devices,” says McKenzie.
According to Mckenzie it didn’t end with assistive devices as the organisations also brought care packs, blankets and food parcels. “There is so much more we can do for our disabled people. They are part of us and should not be treated any differently,” say McKenzie.
