Blackheath store gutted by fire

A store along Van Riebeeck Road in Blackheath was severely burnt on Tuesday night (21 August) and still ablaze on Wednesday morning.


A store along Van Riebeeck Road in Blackheath was severely
burnt on Tuesday night (21 August) and still ablaze on Wednesday morning.

City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue’s Theo Layne says the
fire started shortly after 19:00 and six fire vehicles were dispersed to the
scene. It was confirmed that all contents perished in the fire.

Layne says: “Along with the vehicles were 28 firefighters
who tried to contain the fire.

“The buildings suffered significant damage and the
structural integrity thereof has been compromised.”

Firefighters were still on the scene by 08:00 on Wednesday
trying to put the fire out.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage.
