Gang violence in the Bishop Lavis policing precinct continues unabated as yet another alleged teen gangster was shot dead.

Sgt Samantha Adonis, police spokesperson, said last Friday about 07:00 officers were called to a shooting incident in Chestnut Way and found the body of a 17-year-old teen with multiple gunshot wounds. “He is a known gangster in the area,” Adonis said. “The incident is gang-related.”

A murder case has been opened and anyone with information has been requested to contact the police.

Angus McKenzie, a local ward councillor, said the recent shooting is part of a gang war over turf that has raged for a while. “All indications are the assailant and victim knew each other,” he said.

Last week Bishop Lavis police, on a crime-information gathering patrol of a hotspot in the area, spotted known gang members on the corner of Firethorn and Geelhout Street.

“They saw someone with a backpack running away,” said Adonis.

“The officers gave chase and found the 19-year-old girl with a black pistol and live ammunition. The young woman is facing charges of possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition.”
