Police are urging people to remain cautious about catching lifts with a stranger, after a worrying trend has reared its head in Bellville and surrounds.
According to WO Gawie Hawkins, Bellville police spokesperson, multiple women have reported being robbed of their belongings by a seemingly good samaritan.
Hawkins says these women are usually accompanied by a child.
They are then approached by a man in a Volkswagen Polo while waiting for a taxi.
The driver of the car then offers the woman and child a lift for a nominal fee.
“They drive off and after a short distance he robs them of their money and possessions and drops them off.”
In one of the instances, the robber wielded a gun.
Hawkins urges people to only get into cars where the driver is a familiar person or into a registered taxi.
