Residents will have to find alternative libraries after cable thieves left Bellville Library without power, forcing the City of Cape Town to temporarily shut down the facility.

The library closed its doors on Sunday, 29 December, and will remain shut until 11 January 2026 while City technicians work to replace stolen cables and restore electricity supply to the building.

The closure comes at an inconvenient time for residents, particularly students and job seekers who rely on the library’s services during the holiday period when many need access to computers and internet facilities.

Alternative options available

The City’s Library and Information Services has urged residents to make use of nearby libraries while Bellville remains closed. Alternative facilities include:

  • Tygervalley Library
  • Brackenfell Library
  • Kraaifontein Library
  • Durbanville Library
  • Parow Library

City workers are currently assessing the extent of the damage and working to restore power safely to the building before reopening can take place.

“The building is without electricity supply – work is under way to replace the cables and render the facility safe for use,” the City stated in announcing the closure.

The City of Cape Town has apologised to residents for the inconvenience caused by the closure and expects to have normal services restored when the library reopens in the new year.

Residents requiring library services during this period are encouraged to contact their nearest alternative library for operating hours and available services.
