A 32-year-old man from Belhar has been arrested after he was caught with West Coast lobster worth R50 000 on Thursday (9 February).
According to a report from provincial police, officers of the K9 Unit received information about a vehicle allegedly transporting crayfish from Hawston to Cape Town.
Police spokesperson Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana says at 06:15 they stopped the vehicle on the N2, as it was coming down Sir Lowry’s Pass.
“Upon searching the white Mercedes Benz, they recovered numerous bags containing whole West Coast lobsters and also lobster tails. The driver of the vehicle, a 32-year-old man from Belhar, was arrested.”
She says a total of 249 whole West Coast lobsters and 2902 lobster tails were confiscated.
The man will appear in the Strand Magistrate’s Court on Friday on charges relating to the illegal possession and transportation of West Coast lobsters under the Living Marine Resources Act.
